Obstetrical
Healthy and Low Risk
Pregnancy- Dr Hobson provides
counseling on how to cope with all aspects of
your pregnancy
High Risk Pregnancy-
These are pregnancies where the life or health
of either the mother or baby may be at risk. Dr
Hobson offers a full range of services in order
to minimize the effects of these pregnancy
complications.
2-D Ultrasound-Sonograms
provide Dr Hobson with valuable information
about your baby while it is still in the womb.
Theses scans allow the doctor to monitor your
baby’s development so that you can relax knowing
that everything is progressing as it should.

Gynecology
Abnormal Pap Smears-An
abnormal Pap smear could indicate the presence
of an underlying condition that requires further
diagnostic procedures and treatment. As a
specialist in women’s healthcare, Dr Hobson
understands your concerns and is able to provide
you with the advice and treatment necessary to
resolve whatever medical problem that may be
present.
Annual Exams-Every
woman over eighteen should have an annual
physical exam. Our annual exam procedure
includes a review of your health history, a
general physical exam, pelvic exam and a Pap
smear, breast exam, evaluation of other health
screening tests depending on your age and state
of health and a review of your current
medications and immunization requirements.
Bleeding Problems-Abnormal
vaginal bleeding can be an indication of the
presence of another medical problem. Regardless
of the cause any woman who suffers from abnormal
bleeding should have an exam to determine the
cause.
Dr Hobson also manages problems arising from
menstrual cycle such as excessive bleeding,
frequent bleeding, missed menses, pain with
menses, PMS, mood swings, and breast tenderness.
We have many options for treatment including
diet, exercise, medication, and surgery.
Bone Density-Bone
scans are measurements of the amount of bone in
a particular site. The amount of bone measured
by a scanner is often called the bone density.
The doctor uses these scans, together with other
information, to assess the likelihood of
fractures and whether any treatment is required.
Breast Exams-In
addition to monthly breast self exams that
should be done right after your period. A
clinical breast exams should be conducted on a
regular basis by a qualified health care
professional.
Colposcopy-A
colposcopy is a diagnostic tool to determine the
cause of abnormalities found in Pap Smears. A
colposcopy is a visual examination of the cervix
which is a simple and painless procedure,
usually performed in our office. The actual
procedure lasts approximately ten to fifteen
minutes.
Contraception-Dr
Hobson offers advice on all aspects of
contraception in order to assist our patients in
determining which method is right for you. All
methods are available in our office.
Fibroids-Uterine
Fibroids are benign growths of the uterine
muscle occurring in 30-40% of women. Most
fibroids do not cause any problems and do not
require treatment. Some fibroids however can
cause heavy periods which can lead to anemia and
debilitation. If the fibroids grow large they
can lead to compression syndrome in which
adjacent organs such as the bladder and the
bowel may be compressed, leading to frequency of
urination or constipation and bloating.
Compression syndrome may also cause backache and
sciatica. Dr Hobson offers various forms of
treatment when required for this condition.
Healthcare Screening-Dr
Hobson offers advice and counseling to women on
a variety of topics concerning how to maintain
your health including diet, exercise, birth
control and life planning. Screening tests, such
as mammograms and Pap Smears, can find diseases
early when they are easier to treat. Some women
need certain screening tests earlier, or more
often, than others. The doctor offers advice on
which tests are right for you, when you should
have them, and how often you should have them.
HPV Vaccine-This
vaccine is recommended by the American College
of Obstetricians & Gynecologists for females
aged 9-26 years to prevent them from being
infected by the genital human papillomavirus (HPV)
which is a major risk factor for preinvasive and
invasive cervical cancer. The Advisory Committee
on Immunization Practices has recommended that
the vaccination routinely be given to girls when
they are 11 or 12 years old.
Menopause-Dr
Hobson has a program designed to give his
patients the knowledge and strategies necessary
to help cope with this life changing event that
can be a difficult and confusing time in a
woman’s life.
Ovarian Cysts-Many
women have ovarian cysts without having any
symptoms. Sometimes, though, a cyst will cause
symptoms such as pressure, fullness, or pain in
the abdomen, dull ache in the lower back and
thighs, pain during sexual intercourse, weight
gain and other health problems. If a cyst is
diagnosed the doctor will work with you to
monitor its progress and determine the best
course of treatment.
Osteoporosis-Up
to 20% of a woman’s lifetime bone loss may occur
in the years immediately following menopause.
Although you cannot feel it happening, this bone
loss can lead to postmenopausal osteoporosis, a
thinning of the bones that makes them weaker and
more susceptible to fractures. When appropriate
the doctor can offer a variety of drug
treatments depending on what is best for you.
Pelvic Pain-The
two major causes of chronic pelvic pain are
endometriosis and the buildup of scar tissue
after surgery, called adhesions. If left
untreated, these conditions can often lead to
much more serious health risks. The doctor will
provide prompt and effective treatment as soon
as possible if you are suffering from this
condition.
STD Screening-Sexually
transmitted diseases (STD’s) are among the most
common infectious diseases. They often represent
a serious health risk to women and their babies.
Therefore, we offer discrete, confidential
screening for all types of STD’s including AIDS,
Herpes, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Gonorrhea and
Chlamydia.
Ultrasound-Ultrasound imaging, also called
ultrasound scanning or sonography, is a method
of obtaining images from inside the human body
through the use of high-frequency sound waves.
Obstetric ultrasound refers to the specialized
use of sound waves to visualize and thus
determine the condition of a pregnant woman and
her embryo or fetus. It is beneficial in
monitoring the progress of the pregnancy and
offers the expectant mother their first look at
their baby.

In Office Testing
We offer a variety of in office testing
including ultrasound, electrocardiogram (EKG’s)
and endometrial biopsies.

Reproductive
Medicine
Endometriosis-The
tissue that normally lines the inside of the
uterus is called the endometrium. In some women
the tissue grows outside the uterus. This
condition is called endometriosis. Some women
with endometriosis may have severe pelvic pain,
others who have this condition have no symptoms.
Dr Hobson offers a variety of treatments, both
drug and surgical, to reduce the discomfort
caused by this disease.
Infertility Workup-A
complete infertility workup including a physical
exam, evaluating your medical history, semen
analysis, assessment of ovarian reserve, blood
and other tests all designed to identify the
cause of your infertility are available if
needed.
Ovulation Induction-This
is a safe and effective means of helping
infertile women who do not ovulate or who
ovulate irregularly. We carefully select the
correct treatment regimen and monitor the
process in order to accomplish the patient’s
goals.
Preconception
counseling-There are many important
steps that a couple needs to take when planning
a pregnancy. It is important that both partners
are prepared both physically and emotionally for
this event. We offer a counseling program
designed to ensure that both the mother and
father are mentally and physically prepared for
this life changing event.
Polycystic Ovarian
syndrome-This syndrome is
characterized by anovulation (irregular or
absent menstrual periods) and hyperandrogenism
(elevated serum testosterone and androstenedione).
Patients with this syndrome may complain of
abnormal bleeding, infertility, obesity, excess
hair growth, hair loss and acne. The doctor
offers a range of treatments for this condition
including both drug and surgical therapies.
Ultrasound-Ultrasound
imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or
sonography, is a method of obtaining images from
inside the human body through the use of
high-frequency sound waves. Obstetric ultrasound
refers to the specialized use of sound waves to
visualize and thus determine the condition of a

Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy
At the Laser & Intensive Skin
Care Center, Dr Hobson is interested in helping
you establish hormonal balance. Balance is
the Key to Health. Hormones exist in harmony
with each other they act as partners in a
delicate balancing act. When levels of each
hormone are in the right proportions, body
systems are stable. When balance is lost,
hormone deficiencies and excesses can become
toxic to the body, causing unwanted symptoms,
disorders and disease.
Unbalanced Lifestyle. Hormone balance is
deeply connected to the food we eat, the
exercise we get, the toxins we absorb and our
stressful lifestyle. How these factors impact
hormone levels, and adrenal balance in
particular, is crucial. The adrenal glands make
key hormones that not only mobilize stress and
immune responses, but also build and maintain
bone, muscle, sex drive and function at any age.
When the adrenals get run down, we get run down.
Growing Older. As reproductive function
sputters with age, hormone levels fluctuate then
decline, triggering hormone imbalances.
Menopause and Andropause become manifest. An
unhealthy lifestyle will accelerate the hormonal
decline.
The steroid (sex) hormones include the estrogens
(estradiol, estriol and estrone), the androgens
(testosterone and DHEA), progesterone and
cortisol. These are made in glands and organs of
the body from cholesterol, their chemical
backbone. Both sexes need the same hormones,
although in differing amounts, for survival.
A key to hormone balance is the knowledge that
hormones work in tandem with a healthy mind and
body.
-
First determine symptoms.
-
Test your hormones to
identify specific imbalances
-
If you need to supplement,
work with a doctor who follows the 3 rules
of thumb for achieving hormone balance.
-
Give hormones only to
those people who need them.
-
Use only bio-identical
(natural, human) hormones vs. synthetic
hormones.
-
Use dosages that create
normal, physiologic levels.
-
Avoid chemicals that mimic
estrogens, synthetic HRT, pesticides,
pollutants.
-
Counteract stress with
regular exercise.
-
Stop smoking ASAP & limit
alcohol consumption.
-
If you need to lose weight
eat less, workout more.
-
Choose organic, hormone-free
foods and products.
-
Get enough sleep.
-
Learn what your body needs
to feel good.
-
Look for reasons to laugh
out loud!
Testing hormones in saliva or
blood spot is convenient – without the hastle,
pain and expense of conventional blood tests –
and without sacrificing accuracy.
Advantages of saliva testing.
Advantages of blood spot
testing.
-
Measures larger molecules,
e.g. thyroid hormones in whole blood.
-
Nearly painless finger stick
lowers stress of blood drawing which can
affect accuracy.
The ease and privacy of
collecting blood spot and saliva samples with a
home test kit facilitates routine monitoring of
hormone levels. Samples are stable for 2 to 3
weeks, need no special handling, and can be
mailed in to the lab from anywhere in the world
by regular postal service.
Dr Hobson can start and maintain a custom
bio-identical hormone regimen that closely
mimics what your body should have been doing
naturally for years.
Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her
ovaries stop producing estrogen and
progesterone. On average, this occurs at age 52,
but can occur much earlier or later. As a women
approaches menopause, her hormone production may
fluctuate, causing hot flashes, moodiness,
depression, loss of libido, sleep problems, and
more. Some women experience symptoms early in
some cases 10-15 years before clinical
menopause. We recommend a natural hormone
replacement therapy that can provide relief from
menopause and peri-menopausal symptoms, and may
also help minimize the risks of cardiovascular
disease, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis, and some
types of cancer.
Natural hormone replacement therapy:
-
Match your own hormones
exactly (are bio-identical).
-
Leave the body more quickly
than synthetics, thereby not posing the same
health risks.
-
Don’t have the side effects
of standard HRT drugs if used at the proper
dosage.
-
Are natural mood enhancers;
progesterone (bio-identical hormone) can
provide this benefit, while progestin
(synthetic hormone) can’t.
-
Can be individualized and
custom tailored to meet individual hormone
needs.
-
Don’t interfere with your
own hormone production.
-
Don’t have the same
long-term risks as synthetic, and are
therefore much safer.
-
Can relieve peri-menopausal
and menopausal symptoms.
-
Restore hormonal balance to
the body.
Natural progesterone doesn’t inhibit the
benefits of estrogen on lowering
cholesterol, as does a progestin.
-
Natural progesterone will
not cause you to bleed for the duration of
use of HRT, as can progestin.
-
Natural progesterone may
protect against breast cancer and reduces
the risk of endometrial cancer.
Some common symptoms of hormone
imbalance that women experience:
-
Hot flashes
-
Night sweats
-
Vaginal dryness
-
Low libido
-
Weight gain
-
Irritability
-
Nervousness
-
Anxiety
-
Moodiness
-
Sleep disturbance
-
Foggy thinking
-
Irregular bleeding
-
Dry Skin
-
Head aches
But I already take hormones? Or
I tried hormones already and they didn’t work?
Most women in this country have been prescribed
Premarin and Provera. Premarin is a synthetic
form of estrogen and is made from the urine of
pregnant horses. Provera is synthetic
progesterone and does not have the same
functions as natural progesterone. Most women
get the same dose of medication and usually do
not have their hormone levels measured. At the
Laser & Intensive Skin Care Center, Dr Hobson
takes a different approach. He carefully
measures your entire hormone panel, not just
estrogen, so that he can tailor a replacement
program specifically for you.

Surgery
Advanced Laparoscopy-Allows
rapid recovery from extensive surgery by
avoiding large incisions on the abdomen. These
techniques can include laparoscopic
hysterectomy, removal of endometriosis, ovarian
cysts, ovarian tumors, pelvic adhesions etc.
Laparoscopic skills require extensive experience
and training.
Cesarean Section-When
necessary the doctor may need to performing a
surgical delivery of a baby through an incision
in the mother’s abdomen and the uterus called a
Cesarean Section.
Condyloma Excision-Condylomas
are genital warts, sometime resembling a
cauliflower, that occur on or near the genitals
and are caused by human papillomavirus. These
can be treated non-surgically or through removal
(excision) by a scapel or laser.
Cryotherapy-another
treatment we offer for cervical dysplasia is
cryotherapy, or freezing. This procedure
involves placing a probe against the cervix
which cools it to sub-zero temperatures. The
cells damaged by freezing are shed over the next
month. The main advantages of freezing are that
it is simple to do and easier for the patient.
D&C-This
surgical procedure used to remove the lining (endometrium)
and contents of the uterus. The D&C is most
often used to diagnose and treat abnormal
uterine bleeding. It is also used to treat
incomplete spontaneous miscarriage. The
procedure is performed in the hospital or as
out-patient surgery.
Endometrial Excision-Excision
(peeling off) the endometriosis using minimally
invasive techniques is the most modern technique
available and offers the most effective way of
dealing with this painful condition.
Hysterectomy-We
perform this surgery using three different
methods (vaginal/laparoscopic/abdominal)
depending on the needs of the patient.
Hysteroscopy/Ablation-This
minimally invasive surgical technique uses the
hysteroscope (a small lighted telescopic
instrument) to perform a variety of therapeutic
procedures such as the removal of fibroids,
polyps and the uttering lining.
Laparoscopy-A
minimally invasive surgical technique used to
diagnose and treat a range of abdominal or
pelvic problems.
LEEP-Cervical
LEEP is a procedure used to treat cervical
dysplasia, a precancerous change in the skin on
the cervix. Patients with abnormal PAP smears
have an underlying dysplasia. LEEP involves
numbing of the cervix and then using a special
wire loop to remove the abnormal area. This
procedure is usually painless, although some
milk cramping may occur afterward. The entire
procedure takes about 5 minutes to perform.
Lysis of adhesions-Adhesions
are abnormal tissue attachments between internal
organs, which can develop due to previous
surgeries or diseases. Adhesions can affect
movement and functioning of the organs causing
chronic abdominal pain. Diagnosis of adhesions
is diagnosed using a thin telescope, inserted
into the abdomen through a single small
incision, to view the abdominal cavity and
determine if adhesions are present.
Minimally Invasive
Surgery-Dr Hobson is able to perform
surgery using the most advanced laparoscopic
techniques. These techniques reduce pain,
discomfort and recovery time.
Tubal Sterilization-Depending
on the needs of the patient the doctor performs
this permanent sterilization procedure using a
variety of techniques including minimally
invasive (laparoscopic) surgery or hysteroscopic
tubal sterilization.
Vulvar and Vaginal
Repairs-Any abnormality of the vulva
or vagina that can be surgically repaired could
be performed by the doctor.
Urogynecology
Bulking Agents-This
treatment is performed for stress incontinence,
where Periurethral bulking agents are injected
to increase tissue bulk around the urethra
usually done in the office.
Cystoscopy-The
doctor performs this procedure to examine the
inside of your bladder. It allows the doctor to
look at areas of your bladder and urethra that
usually do not show up well on X-rays.
Cystoscopy can also be used to treat some
bladder problems and may eliminate the need for
more extensive surgery.
Incontinence-Dr
Hobson provides treatment for all types of
urinary incontinence including stress, urge,
functional and overflow.
Interstitial Cystitis
Treatment-A chronic inflammation or
irritation of the bladder wall that causes pain
and other symptoms. Dr Hobson offers a variety
of treatments and surgery when necessary.
Pelvic Floor
Reconstruction-When the muscles on
the pelvic floor become damaged or weak as a
result of childbirth they are unable to support
the weight of some or all of the pelvic and
abdominal organs. If this occurs, the organs may
drop below their normal positions, causing
symptoms including discomfort, pain, pressure
and urinary incontinence. Dr Hobson offers
reconstructive surgery for this condition if
required.
Sling Procedures-The
doctor is able to perform this procedure for
women with severe stress incontinence caused by
weak sphincter muscles.
Urodynamics- A term that describes a
series of diagnostic tests used to evaluate
voiding disorders such as urgency, pain, slow
stream, frequency, hesitancy, incontinence and
other urinary problems.
